Germany during Oktoberfest or German Christmas Markets? Decisions. Decisions. But I am so glad we chose to go at Christmastime to visit friends in Germany and to see Koln, Dortmund, and Dusseldorf. Each city entirely envelopes you in Christmas, from the smells of waffles and gluhwein to the twinkling lights and colorful decorations to the church bells and carols being sung in all languages.

Side note: Guess which Christmas carol is the biggest crowd-favorite. Feliz Navidad!

Everyone is so kind and happy. It’s a genuine feeling of Christmas cheer that I haven’t experienced outside of my own family home. We ate currywurst and drank gluhwein and bought delicate wood carvings and handcrafted gifts.

We also enjoyed visiting the Borussia Dortmund Stadium with it’s interactive, self-paced tour. Our futbol fan was thrilled to see the field, stand in the “Yellow Wall” even if we weren’t in season to see a game live.

Searching for a more unique experience? Rather than visit a museum about coal mining throughout Germany, we took a tour of one of the last working mines. Donned with our hard hats and suits, we were able to hear directly from men who used to work the mine, operate some of the equipment and experience a world underground as we never had before.

“Drink doch ene met...” Drink one with us.

Of course, we visited a few breweries and only wish the bottomless glasses would make their way stateside! Fruh and Peters Brauhaus are probably two of the better-known stops and for good reason. You get the full experience of the German brewhouse. Just remember: don’t ask for water, or forget to signal you’re full. :)

Visiting Germany during the Christmas market season is a truly enchanting experience. The air is filled with the sweet aroma of gingerbread and mulled wine, while the streets and squares come alive with festive decorations and twinkling lights. From the bustling city markets to the cozy village squares, each market offers a unique blend of traditional crafts, delicious treats, and a joyful atmosphere. Strolling through the stalls, you can find beautifully handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys, and intricate holiday decorations. Indulge in warm pretzels, roasted chestnuts, and aromatic spiced cookies, all while sipping on a steaming cup of Glühwein. The sound of carolers and live music add to the festive ambiance, creating unforgettable memories of a magical winter wonderland. Make plans to see for yourself!
